Service Biotech offers advanced ultrastructural analysis services in the ophthalmological area. Our SEM, TEM and EDX analyses support research and quality control on corneal, conjunctival and lacrimal tissues, providing precise data for the development of drugs and ocular devices.

Polymer mucoadhesion

The success of many controlled drug release systems depends on their ability to adhere effectively to mucous membranes.

  • Interface analysis: we study the interaction between bioadhesive polymers and biological substrates to quantify the force and extent of contact.
  • TEM/SEM visualisation: we observe the conformational changes of the polymer in contact with the mucosa and its possible penetration into mucinic networks.
  • Drug delivery optimisation: we provide essential data for the design of vectors that maximise residence time at the site of action.

Study of biomaterials

Service Biotech offers a complete suite of analyses for the validation of biomaterials for tissue engineering, prosthetics and regenerative medicine.

  • Topographic characterisation: analysis of porosity, roughness and nanostructure of scaffolds and implants.
  • Ultrastructural analysis: use of TEM for the study of nanostructured materials and cell-material interfaces.
  • Chemical validation: EDX mapping to confirm material purity and distribution of specific functionalising agents.

Available services

SEM

Scanning electron microscopy is a technique for visualizing pre-treated and metallized biological samples. This technique can be applied in various fields of microbiology and/or biology and/or medicine, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, dentistry, materials engineering and more widely for all fields of life sciences.

TEM

Transmission electron microscopy is a microscopic technique in which the ultrastructure of the biological sample is evaluated, the magnification is in the order of nanometers, obtaining significant data for both research and diagnosis. The cellular ultrastructure can be observed in great detail, highlighting its various compartments, obtaining morphological and functional data.

EDX/WDX

Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) is a technique used for the elemental analysis or chemical characterization of a sample. As a type of spectroscopy, it is based on the investigation of a sample through the interactions between electromagnetic radiation and matter, analyzing the X-rays emitted by matter in response to impact with charged particles. This technique can be applied in various fields of microbiology and/or biology and/or medicine, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, dentistry, materials engineering and more widely for all fields of life sciences.

Scratch Wound Healing Assay

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the action of the new hyaluronic acid at 6 hours, in order to verify its efficacy, persistence and activity on HCE tissues (in vitro corneal tissues). The analysis, conducted according to the Scratch Wound Healing Assay protocol, allows the influence of the drug on tissue re-epithelialization capacity to be estimated.

Ferning SEM-Test

Ferning-SEM examination (mucus only) allows visualization of mucus ferning. Ferning-SEM allows you to find out if you have an intolerance to contact lenses. EDX area mapping is also available to visualize the quantity of sulphur and its oxidative state directly on mucus with and without drug.

SEM Immunogold

Immunogold in SEM is an investigation technique for ultrastructural membrane proteins, with a specific antibody marker. This technique can be applied in various fields of microbiology and/or biology and/or medicine, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, dentistry, and more widely for all fields of life sciences.

Skills and R&D
Scientific consulting services

We are able to quickly carry out patent searches and monitoring for effective management of innovation and competition. HIGH QUALITY AND SPECIALIZED SERVICES: these techniques support the therapeutic action of the doctor and better target therapies; in the corporate field, we support preclinical and clinical activity with tests that allow a clear understanding of the action of treatments on both tissues and bacterial cells, which allows us to reduce study times and enhance the value of the product for commercial activity.
